The Aesthetics of Excess: Nail Art and Self-Expression in the 21st Century Feminist Movement

Updated: Aug 30, 2024

In a world where self-expression is key, nail art has emerged as a powerful form of visual communication. At the University of Florida, under the guidance of Dr. Jillian Hernandez, a group of researchers including myself attempt to unravel the intricate web that ties nail art to economics, feminism, and politics. This investigation aims to shed light on the significance of accessories in modern-day self-expression and feminism, particularly focusing on the aesthetics of excess.

The Power of Nail Art: More Than Meets the Eye

Nail art is not merely about painting nails; it is a statement, a reflection of one's inner being. The colors, designs, and patterns chosen by individuals speak volumes about their personality, beliefs, and aspirations. In the realm of feminism, nail art becomes a canvas for women to showcase their autonomy and defiance against societal norms. Our research mainly focuses on taking oral histories from nail technicians and understand the history, present, and future of nail art and its socioeconomic and political implications.

When a woman adorns her nails with intricate designs or bold colors, she challenges the traditional notions of femininity and beauty standards. It is a subtle yet impactful way of reclaiming control over one's body and projecting confidence in a world that often dictates how women should look and behave.

Making a Statement, One Nail at a Time

Nail art has also found its place in the realm of politics, becoming a tool for advocacy and activism. From bold slogans to intricate symbols, nails have become miniature canvases for expressing dissent, solidarity, and resistance. In an era where social media amplifies visual messages, nail art has the power to spark conversations and ignite change.

By embracing nail art as a form of political expression, women reclaim agency over their bodies and voices in a society that often silences them. The act of decorating nails becomes a form of protest, a way to challenge oppressive systems and champion causes that matter.

In conclusion, nail art transcends its aesthetic appeal to become a powerful medium for self-expression, feminism, and activism. My work as a researcher for Dr. Hernandez allows me to give back to communities and spaces that have helped me with my own expression, and understand how we can use academic and research in the humanities to make changes in society.
